"Every time they walk outside at school...they're on another adventure."
Deciding on a school for their children seemed like one of the biggest decisions they’d ever made, but after comparing a number of private and public schools Nancy Haynes and Bryan Bickford decided on C.A. Frost Environmental Science Academy.
“We felt like where to go to kindergarten was the biggest decision we’d ever made at that point because we wanted to stay at the same school for all of their elementary years,” Nancy said of her and her husband’s’ decision to choose Frost. “All it took was just walking in the door. It just felt right.”
The couple said they’ve been impressed with the school’s integration of environmental science into nearly every aspect of their kids’ education. They note their kids are outside learning – aside from recess - nearly every day, whether on the school’s spacious grounds or in its greenhouse.
They’re especially impressed with the school’s leadership over the years and their commitment to rigorous academics and involvement of its families.
“There’s a responsibility, a real accountability to its mission and the families and staff work together to make that happen,” Bryan said.
They also give kudos to new Principal Greg Ramey for carrying on the school’s tradition of excellence.
“He’s a great motivator of kids and staff,” Nancy said. “He really understands the importance of being a team and making sure everybody has a role… If there is a problem he comes at solving it from the perspective of what do you need to succeed.”
Under the district’s Transformation Plan which calls for “growing what works,” a small high school is being considered at Frost. The district’s growing variety of options which include a new Museum School next school year for families and students has them excited about the district’s future.
“Whether it’s environmental science or the museum, there are different ways for students to learn which is real exciting for the future,” Bryan said.
“GRPS has incredible opportunities,” Nancy said. “You figure out what your kids are interested in or what you as a family are interested in and you can find it at GRPS.”
