GRPS Announces More Inclusive, Accessible Back to School Celebrations

GRPS is cancelling the Back to School Celebration and instead scheduling free ice cream socials at schools throughout the city. A full list of neighborhood events is listed below. For additional details about specific events, please contact the individual building.

New classrooms, upgraded facilities a ‘huge blessing’ at Buchanan School

When classes begin at Buchanan Elementary School this August, students and teachers will walk into 16 new classrooms, new art and music rooms and cafeteria, and a spacious new gym. The addition to the Southwest Side school is part of the $175 million bond approved by Grand Rapids voters in 2015.

Running the Good Race - From Refugee Camp to Top Student-Athlete

It was graduation day, and Jama Jafari Jama was in a bind. City High School commencement was that evening at Fountain Street Church. But first he had a race to run – the 800 meters in a regional track qualifier in Grand Haven.

There was no way he was missing the race, or the commencement.

The Kent County Health Department (KCHD) is offering clients of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women Infants and Children (WIC) the opportunity to get $25 worth of free food from area farmers markets until October 31, 2018.
