A federal grant awarded to the Grand Rapids Fire Department will continue to fund and expand its Residential Safety Program (RSP). The RSP provides residents with free smoke detectors and home safety assessments. This year's $347,000 award, however, also includes funds to begin to install carbon monoxide (CO) detectors in homes.

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is asking educators, administrators, students, and parents to help it find the next Michigan Teacher of the Year (MTOY). The Michigan Teacher of the Year program, sponsored by the Meemic Foundation, recognizes outstanding educational leaders across Michigan for their work to elevate the teaching profession.
Six GRPS students earned All-American honors at the recent AAU Junior Olympic Track and Field National Meet held at Eastern Michigan University’s Rynearson Stadium on July 29 through August 5, competing for the Grand Rapids F.I.R.E. summer track program. The Grand Rapids F.I.R.E. is coached by Ottawa Hills track coaches Dan Ebright and Tony Shellman. The Junior Olympic meet draws kids from all over the country to compete in the eight day meet. Athletes finishing in the top 8 in their event earn All American status.
