Congress Elementary School to Host a Public Forum on October 24

The parents and community of Congress Elementary School will host a Candidate Forum on October 24, 2018, so that voters can learn more about the candidates for Grand Rapids Public School Board of Education who are seeking election on the November 6, 2018, ballot.

The parents and community of Congress Elementary School will host a Candidate Forum on October 24, 2018, so that voters can learn more about the candidates for Grand Rapids Public School Board of Education who are seeking election on the November 6, 2018, ballot.

The forum will take place from 6:00 - 7:30 pm in the gymnasium at Congress Elementary School, 940 Baldwin SE. The forum is free and open to the public, with interpretation to be provided for Spanish speaking attendees. Video of the forum will be made available after the event.

The forum, moderated by Congress parents Brad Tarrance and Jessie Guerrero-Horn, will allow the candidates time to introduce themselves, respond to questions from the community, and make an argument as to why they are the best candidate for the board.

Congress parents organized the event so that GRPS parents and the wider community can hear about the candidates’ priorities for the district. Tammy VanderWoude, one of the Congress School parents involved in organizing the forum, said, “Seats on the Board of Education are incredibly important positions in our community, especially as GRPS moves forward under new leadership after the departure of Superintendent Teresa Weatherall Neal.”

Kevin Vos, another Congress parent, explained, “We really felt like there needed to be an opportunity to learn more about the candidates, and to ask them very specific questions about their vision for GRPS so that we can all make more informed decisions on the ballot on November 6.”

Many of the City’s neighborhood associations are supporting and endorsing the forum. Doors will open at 5:45 pm.  If you would like to submit a question for consideration for the forum, you can email CongressPTCC@gmail.com.
