GRPS Announces More Inclusive, Accessible Back to School Celebrations

GRPS is cancelling the Back to School Celebration and instead scheduling free ice cream socials at schools throughout the city. A full list of neighborhood events is listed below. For additional details about specific events, please contact the individual building.

For years, Grand Rapids Public Schools has held one big “Back to School Celebration” at John Ball Park to kick off the school year with food, games, and informational booths. While the event has been a great success, one event at one location is not as inclusive and accessible to people from throughout the city.

As a result, GRPS is cancelling the Back to School Celebration and instead scheduling free ice cream socials at schools throughout the city.

“We are committed to equity, inclusion, customer service, and ensuring our schools are welcoming, open, and accessible,” said Teresa Weatherall Neal, Superintendent of Schools. “We believe that transitioning to neighborhood-centric events will meet these goals and further connect our schools to their neighborhoods.”
