‘Grow Our Own’ Talent Pipeline Approach to Increase Student Interest and Diversity in Education Profession

Grand Rapids Public Schools and Ferris State University’s School of Education are launching the Academy of Teaching and Learning at Innovation Central High School.  The Academy of Teaching and Learning will create a talent pipeline from K12 to higher education and back to GRPS.

Students participating in the Academy of Teaching and Learning will explore and prepare for a career in education through mentoring with master teachers, real life experience in classrooms, dual enrollment, and professional preparation for the field. This is a unique “grown our own” teacher development program.

Successful program graduates will be offered admittance to Ferris State University School of Education to complete a bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate. These graduates will also be first in line for hiring in Grand Rapids Public Schools, with tuition reimbursement available.

Students in the Academy of Teaching and Learning have the opportunity to earn seven (7) credits from Ferris State University by taking dual enrollment education courses. These courses will be taught by a Ferris professor in conjunction with GRPS staff. Upon enrollment at Ferris after graduation, students will be granted an additional three (3) credits, for a total of 10 credits towards their bachelor’s degree.

Innovation Central has a strong track record of preparing students for college and careers in high-demand fields. The school has a 91% graduation rate, which is the second highest in the district.
