At 12:04 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017, the Grand Rapids Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 706 Wealthy St SE. Responding fire companies arrived to find a large two-story commercial structure with smoke venting from the second floor. No occupants were in the structure upon arrival of the Fire Department.

Ten fire companies responded to the 2-alarm fire. Upon entering the structure, fire crews found fire on the first and second floors spreading into the attic.

“Multiple fire crews worked in a coordinated manner to get at the seat of the fire, which had spread throughout many of the walls and into the attic and roof areas of the structure,” said Ron Tennant, acting deputy fire chief. The fire was brought under control by 12:50 p.m. and units cleared the scene at 4:34 p.m.

Initial damage estimates are valued at more than $170,000. The cause of the fire is radiated heat from operating electrical equipment. Neighboring businesses suffered more than $1,000 in losses.

The Eastown Neighborhood Association is working with the occupants, the Wild Bunch Biker Club, to remain in the neighborhood.
